Sunny Rice has been the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program agent in Petersburg, Alaska since 2004, having begun her career in Alaska as a fish processor in Valdez in 1990. In her role with Alaska Sea Grant, she helped create their FishBiz program in 2006 and co-founded the Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit in 2007. Since then, she has developed and taught programs on fishing business planning and finances, exiting the fishing business, direct marketing, crew training, the Alaska fisheries regulatory process, and community cold storage. She has also worked on projects to understand sea otter recolonization in Southeast Alaska, reduce humpback whale entanglements in Southeast net fisheries, avoid seabirds for smaller longline vessels, and created the brochure,”Coping with an Accident at Sea.”
