Wild capture fisheries are often viewed as commodities, rather than an important part of the domestic food system. This disconnect has limited seafood harvesters’ access to resources, including grants, loans, technical assistance, and other services that are widely available to farmers, ranchers, and other segments of the U.S. food system. This panel will provide a forum for fishermen and other members of the seafood sector to hear from policymakers, industry representatives, and Tribal leaders on the status of new and evolving national initiatives that aim to strengthen the seafood sector by more effectively integrating seafood into broader food system initiatives. The dialogue will focus on what has been achieved, what it means in practice, and what gaps still need to be addressed.
