This is what will sink your vessel next season!

The provocative title of this presentation is intended to attract attention to the factors which contribute to vessel losses, offer reminders on the common-sense preventative actions, and promote discussion about new and novel ways to address recurring problems. By highlighting NIOSH statistics and examining specific vessel incidents, a case will be made for focusing attention on specific maintenance, operational and design issues which weaken a vessel’s stability, increase the chances of flooding, draw attention away from the operator at critical moments, or otherwise put crew at risk. The general trend nationwide has been a decline in fatalities in the industry. Looking back, what has been done to cause this and how can this be built upon for further reductions, specifically as it relates to the vessels themselves, as nearly 50% of fatalities are due to vessel disasters of one type or another.
