Fatigue Bites: Safety & Survival Factors in Marine Casualties

Commercial fishing vessel owner-operators spend multiple days at sea with their crew members. The majority of hours are spent working to maximize catch while sleep is not the priority. However, the lack of sleep causes numerous cognitive, safety and health issues which play an under reported role in maritime casualties and in mariner’s short and long-term health. This presentation will explore the role sleep plays in risk taking, decision making, memory, overall health and how sleep can prevent marine casualties.
